Articles ! Help Kids Beat The Heat & Avoid Dehydration

Temperature that hover 10 degree above the average high temperature for the region, humid or muggy conditions that last for several weeks are defined as extreme heat.

As kids play outdoors in the sun, it's important to keep them hydrated and cool to avoid dehydration and other serious heat-related injuries.

Prevention :
Parents should encourage children to drink water before, during and after any outdoor activities. Avoid giving them very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

Replace Salt and Minerals :
Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body. Give them two to four glasses of cool, non-alcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals lost in sweat.

Clothing and Sun Screen :
Dress infants and children in cool, loose clothing and shade their heads and faces with hats.

Sunburn affects body's ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids. It also causes pain and damage skin. Apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to sending them out.

Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully :
If a child has to be outdoors, try to limit his / her activities to morning and evening hours.
