Variety is the spice of life. But, when this variety is manifested in a variety of diseases then life tends to become bland for you as well as your cat. Common cat diseases like upper respiratory infections, feline infectious peritonitis, feline leukemia, feline distemper etc can be quite distressing for your cat.

It has been observed that less than 16 weeks old kittens and outdoor cats are more likely to contract infectious diseases. Therefore, it is essential to keep a track of your cuddly cat's health issues and get her vaccinated against these diseases to avoid their incidence in the future.

Let's have a look at some common cat diseases.

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
Feline leukemia virus is a highly infectious disease of cats that is generally transmitted through the saliva, urine, and feces of infected cats. Leukemia is usually associated with cancer of white blood cells. But, it may cause other types of cancers too. The virus may also promote arthritis, anemia and other related diseases in cats. Feline leukemia virus primarily affects the immune system adversely. Fortunately, you can get your cat vaccinated against this fatal disease in order to prevent it.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
As the name suggests, this cat illness is similar to AIDS in humans, though the virus is not the same in both the cases. The virus weakens the immune system and causes various other cat sicknesses such as respiratory problems, non responding infections, persistent diarrhea, oral cavity infections, poor appetite, weight loss etc. The virus is found to be transmitted through saliva and cat bites are the best source of contracting this disease. Therefore, protect your cat from other cats because currently, there is no vaccine or cure available for this feline disease.

Feline Panleukopenia
Feline panleukopenia, commonly known as feline distemper, affects the lining of the gastrointestinal tract of a cat. This, in turn causes internal ulceration that results in malnutrition, anemia, fever, vomiting, depression, loose stools with blood, loss of appetite and similar other problems. Dehydration is a significant complication of this contagious viral disease.
